5 News delivers distinctive programmes with people at the heart of our storytelling. The Deputy Programme Editor position is a hybrid role, some days you will be outputting our evening programme and on some of your shifts you will be writing our main programme and lunchtime updates. This is a leading editorial and creative role in the 5 News team. We are looking for an experienced journalist with creative ideas and sound news judgement. The successful candidate must be able to make correct legal and compliance decisions to tight deadlines.

Responsibilities

  • Produce programmes of the highest quality
  • Decide editorial direction and content of all elements of the programme
  • Generate running orders, making key editorial judgements to provide an appropriate mix of stories for the Channel 5 audience
  • Ensure that 5 News programmes are of a consistently high standard, with distinctive coverage, innovative ideas, and stylish presentation
  • Generate original story ideas, treatments for news stories and long-term projects
  • An awareness of the importance of digital news, a willingness to contribute to 5 News’ digital output and an understanding of the different demands of TV and digital output is key
  • Hold team meetings, brief the News Desk and presenters on the programme content and their role in it
  • Make a final check of scripts and packages prior to transmission
  • Make correct decisions on news values, legal issues, taste and decency in accordance with Ofcom regulations and the ITN Compliance manual
  • Maintain an overview of programme timing
  • Make decisions about changes to the running order during transmission
  • Understand budgetary requirements and constraints
  • Have overall responsibility for scripting of packages, particularly relating to compliance
  • Responsible for writing scripts for our main 5pm programme and lunchtime bulletins
  • Drive an agenda that interests, engages and stimulates 5 News viewers
  • Be responsible for shorter bulletins and updates throughout the day
  • Make an active and creative contribution to all aspects of the programme
  • Responsible for final check on programme graphics and Astons
  • Support management to ensure the smooth running of the whole news operation
  • Carry out a mixture of Programme Editor and Assistant Programme Editor functions
  • Line management responsibilities

Qualifications

  • Strong leadership skills with a positive attitude and calm under pressure
  • Excellent writing ability with a clear and concise writing style
  • A proven track record in TV new programme making
  • Competent editing skills
  • Ability to initiate engaging, concise and accessible scripts
  • Strong news judgement
  • Flair and imagination
  • A good understanding of key political, financial and international news, together with a feel for more popular, human interest and off-agenda stories
  • An ability to articulate and defend decisions made
  • Good understanding of programme structure
  • Attention to detail under pressure
  • Empathy for the issues that matter to Channel 5 viewers
  • A good communicator with strong problem-solving skills
  • Excellent knowledge of Ofcom regulations and the ITN compliance manual
  • Awareness of health and safety responsibilities
  • Awareness and understanding of the financial implications of all decision-making
