FLO Department Supervisor

While all Animation studios look to hire people who are creative and hard-working, DNEG Animation is specifically looking for pioneers who seek to push the limits of what the world’s most collaborative art form can achieve, and to give those pioneers the space and the resources to build a new studio that’s doing something different.

In Final Layout we assemble locations, then we pass this set information to other departments, and finally we gather and optimize the content of each shot before moving into Lighting and Compositing departments.

As Supervisor you will be responsible for the direction and management of the final layout team. You will ultimately be responsible for the material generated in all the processes (artistic or not) and for the technical aspects of these processes themselves.

Responsibilities

  • Revise and approve all the artistic material generated in the department.
  • Provide artistic support and guidance to the rest of the team in their respective tasks through clear and efficient communication.
  • Building of outstanding locations with an optimal usage of assets.
  • Creation distributions using scattering tools such as Mash or similar.
  • Improve shot framing per camera (strong image composition skills required).
  • Develop the department’s pipeline in collaboration with the VFX supervisor, the TD Supervisor and other department Supervisors.
  • Define tools specifications and develop strategies in order to have an efficient internal workflow.
  • Supervise the department’s daily workflow, assign tasks to artists, and monitor deadlines with the production team.
  • Provide technical support and guidance to the rest of the team in their respective tasks through clear and efficient communication.
  • Keep up on current artistic methodologies and on technology trends and tools that best suit the production and the company
  • Works closely with the Production Supervisors in the management of the department, biding the work and creating the schedule based on an approved quota, ensuring it is met during production, casting appropriately to artists
  • Collaborates and keeps a fluid communication relation with other departments
  • Responsible alongside the Production Supervisor for maintaining crew morale, fostering a good working atmosphere and ethics.
  • Give guidance to the team, supervise the quality of the work and, works closely with production, in the fulfillment of deadlines
  • Mentor potential up-and-coming talent to make them grow in the Studio
  • Partner with HR to source and recruit the best industry talent for the department

Requirements

  • Over 8 years or more of professional experience in VFX or Animation industries
  • At least 4 years of experience as Lead in the Animation industry
  • Experience and in-depth knowledge of Autodesk Maya software usage (references, caches, topology, complex scenes management, scattering systems, Arnold rendering…)
  • Houdini is a plus

Must Have

  • A comprehensive knowledge of Maya
  • Familiarity with pipeline issues and fixes
  • Demonstrable experience in visual storytelling, including composition and staging.
  • A “Generalist” ability/skillset

Nice to Have

  • A good understanding of cameras and lenses
  • A Showreel featuring high level animated content.
