The Job

This position will be required to edit, to the highest standard, a variety short-form and long-form Investigative and Documentary style news content via Premiere Pro, After Effects and other tools, utlizing CNN footage, third party and social media video, stills and audio to create interesting and illuminating stores. The Investigative VE will understand the different demands required to edit investigative narratives both effectively and creatively ensuring it brings about the greatest understanding of the material used.

This person will be expected to play a key role in CNN London’s Investigative news edit department, collaborating with the producers, researchers and photojournalists on the creative and editorial direction of their stories, from pre-production until finished product for whatever platform. They will also be a partner in aspects of shooting and post-production techniques that will best enhance their end product.

Throughout the investigative production process, it is essential that the Investigative Video Editor has a strong collaborative relationship with the rest of the team. In their role the Editor will also be required to utilise software packages such as After Effects and Photoshop to create full screen graphics, often animated.

The Daily

• Package Editing

Edit Investigative news content including news packages and longer format news documentary programming, using software such as Adobe Premier and Adobe After Effects. Highest quality and time-efficient video editing to create quality stories that meets the high standards for broadcast on CNN International, generating revenue for the company.

• Pre-Production

Collaborate with producers on a creative and editorial ‘vision’ at the pre-production stage. Determine a specific look and feel required to tell a story to its strengths, both from a shooting, editing and graphics perspective.

• Managing Multiple Responsibilities

Work on a variety of investigative projects – from multiple edits in various stages, testing workflows and graphic ideas, software and equipment, to pro-actively building collaborative working practices with editorial, engineering and newsgathering partners.

• Media Management

Take responsibility for the housekeeping of numerous projects. Making sure project media is easily accessible to team members. Enable media to be efficiently shared across multiple locations. Also ensure the material gets into the library and media managed off the server when the story is complete.

The Essentials

• Technical knowledge, organisational skills and an understanding of media management are essential attributes to bring to the role. From time to time the editor will be expected to work out of normal hours to deliver the stories as needed.
• Deep technical knowledge of all current hardware and software systems in place, as well as a thorough understanding of media management, show archiving and distribution.
• Intimate knowledge of the hardware and software elements involved. Mac OS, Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe After Effects essential. Ability to create graphics and refine video and audio to the highest standard.
• Able to test new editing technologies for the benefit of CNN investigative newsgathering.
• Understands and adapts to the broadcast workflows upon which CNN News programmes are produced.
• An ability to organize and media manage the department’s multiple media projects.
• Adapts well to change and is iterative and flexible with priorities, for example during breaking news in delivering the Investigative News content.
